A.13  Case Study: On Demand Testing Resources

Overview

A large commercial organization, ACME International, would like to assist customers in testing and evaluating their applications in conjunction with a mix of hardware and software environments.  ACME wants to provide full utility computing access to these environments by creating a web portal which allows customers to specify the needed mix of hardware architectures and peripherals, operating systems, and support applications.  This portal will connect to a backend responsible for scheduling these resources, dynamically provisioning the resources and needed compute environments, and managing host and network security.

ACME must also provide automated customer notification of availability and key changes to allocations and provide persistent user data management to allow extended resource usage.  Further, ACME's utility computing service must provide both tiered service level agreements to key customers for on demand requests and the ability to provide periodic batch sessions which automatically run multi-platform regression tests for customer applications.

Solution

Moab Utility Computing Suite can enable the creation of the fully customized per request environment by utilizing resource monitors, provisioning systems, and storage and network managers.  Tightly or loosely scheduled automated batch runs on utility computing resources can also be enabled using standing triggers or standing reservations.
