In a nutshell, Maui is an advanced batch scheduler with a large feature set well suited for high performance computing (HPC) platforms including large Alpha and PC clusters, SP, and O2K systems. It uses aggressive scheduling policies to optimize resource utilization and minimize job response time. It simultaneously provides extensive administrative control over resources and workload allowing a high degree of configuration in the areas of job prioritization, scheduling, allocation, fairness, fairshare, and reservation policies. Maui's QOS mechanism allows directed delivery of resources and services, policy exemption, and controlled access to special features. Maui also possesses a very advanced reservation infrastructure allowing sites to control exactly when, how, and by whom resources are used. This infrastructure also enables full support of non-intrusive meta scheduling. The integrated 'allocation bank' interface provides further functionality allowing a site to manage resource allocations in real-time with group allocation sharing, allocation expirations, etc.
Maui was designed based on the collective experience of the world's largest and most advanced HPC centers. It provides the tools they have needed to control, track, and optimize the usage of their resources. Extensive statistics collection and profiling tools, 'test' mode operation, and an advanced, full feature, integrated simulator allow 'production' sites to thoroughly test all changes and configurations in a completely safe manner. Maui was also developed to be highly manageable with detailed logging support, internal diagnostics, and intelligent state analysis tools to allow even an inexperienced administrator to easily determine the 'why' to most common questions.
