If it helps, Warewulf NHC has bash functions to canonicalize memory
amounts.  They can turn, for example, 1024mb or 1g into a number of
bytes, and vice versa.  And it's all native bash.  Feel free to use
them for a submit filter if you'd like.

(This is not so much for David but for the original poster,
obviously!)  :-)
