Seems like I jumped the gun here.  I'm able to reproduce the same problem on 
torque-3.0.5-snap.201204051313

Further testing seems to indicate that it works better if one deletes all the 
nodes first and then adds all the nodes afterwards instead of alternating 
between deleting and adding nodes.
