we have some good news for you, Torque 2.4 has arrived in
Debian and Ubuntu as a collaborative effort of the two
distros' communities. It is now in Debian Squeeze (testing)
, which is expected to be releases as the next stable
version later this year. Ubuntu has it in the Maverick
The packaging followed the philospophy to change as little
as possible of the original source tree. The few bits that
have been changed appear as separate patches . It would
be lovely if those could all be integrated with Torque 2.5
or even earlier?
The packaging brings some advancements for an easier mainte-
nance and installation across a cluster with it. There must
be something to it, since we are aware of 6-8 independent
efforts to package Torque. A major achievement over the
manual installation is possibly the clean separation of server,
scheduler, mom and client in separate packages. The latter
has a separate GUI version with dependencies to X, i.e. for
the packaging the sources are compiled twice, one time with
a GUI and one time without it.
Here the list of available packages:
libtorque2-dev - header files for libtorque2
libtorque2 - shared library for Torque client and server
torque-client-x11 - GUI for torque clients
torque-client - command line interface to Torque server
torque-common - Torque Queueing System shared files
torque-mom - job execution engine for Torque batch system
torque-pam - PAM module for PBS MOM nodes
torque-scheduler - scheduler part of Torque
torque-server - PBS-derived batch processing server
one will install by invoking apt-get install with any subset
of torque-server, torque-mom and torque-client as arguments.
The packages are easily rebuilt under older versions of either
distribution. We have tried them down to lenny and jaunty.
Many, many thanks go to all who were involved, to mind come Daniel,
Dominique, Jordi and Morten, and our thanks also go to Michael
and Chris from Cluster Resources for their encouragement.
Please let patches or comments flow in. And we are very interested
in any issues that you have run into while upgrading or to hear
that is just went smoothly.
With best regards,
