[torqueusers] Submitting X application

Hi Glen,

Thanks for the tip. What the -X does for the qsub ? I'm guessing that it
only exports the $DISPLAY from the submitting host to execution node.
Correct ?

I suppose that my issue is more X related than PBS (Torque). I
encountered that I cannot open the X application even without PBS. I use
ssh to connect from one node to any one. If I disable the ssh
X-forwarding via ssh -x (having it enabled usually), I'm not able to
forward X via unsecure connection (security does not matter here for me)
for some hosts. So this is probably why the application started by PBS
cannot open the display.

Most of the nodes are RedHat Linux Enterprise 4, some others are old
Fedora ones. I need to take a closer look on X server setup. Here is an
example which does not work for some nodes, but works for some others.

submit_node$ xhost +

submit_node$ ssh -x exec_node

exec_node$ export DISPLAY=submit_node:X.Y

exec_node$ run_my_x_appl

Error: Can't open display

torque includes X forwarding functionality

qsub -X -I will give you an interactive job with X forwarding

I would strongly suggest upgrading from OpenPBS to TORQUE

We have running the OpenPBS cluster at Linux network for a while for
batch computer intensive jobs. I was asked to configure the cluster in
order to make possible submit interactive jobs which launch X-windows
application, i.e. running the GUI based application at one of the MOM
machine and see the graphic result on the machine where the job was
submitted. This approach would better balance the GUI applications load
over the network.

I did several trials with interactive job "qsub -I" but I did not get
into the state when the X was forwarded to the client where the job was
submitted. I usually get the "Can't open display" error message from the
application. I tried to set the DISPLAY env. variable to the submitting
node, set the xhost +, etc. but no result. I'm not an expert of
X-windows system at all. Since I'm running quite obsolete slightly
configured OpenPBS 2.3.16, I looked at Torque hoping to find some
solution. It was not the case, thus I'm asking whether someone has some
solution for this issue.

I know just very few about the LSF, but it somehow supports this

Any solution ?

Thank you,
