One might even try to hack a layer in between that uses MySQL/Postgres 
or even Berkeley DB4 (which does have replication) as its underlying DB.

Most of the time it's not too hard to do that - of corse depending on 
the manpower (and importance) you want to spend.
But that would definately be "the right way(TM)".
