Okay, sorry, it is TOO early in the morning. Just rewrote all --set to
--with and expected configure to complain.
As you wrote in your mail, they are gone, but still configure won't complain
about --with-cflags.

make distcheck works (RH9, x86).

make rpm doesn't work (RPM version 4.2):

error: parse error in expression
