Patch fixing some of the warnings

Split-off from bug 154.

With GCC 4.7 and -Wall one gets several unused-but-set-variable errors.
See bug 154 comment 0 for a list.

The attached patch fixes some of those; I did not test it very thoroughly;
additionally, I do not know whether some of those should be removed or rather
commented - my choice might not be the most sensible.
