First of all I reckon this is a very good move.

Secondly I wonder if looking at what people like the Open-MPI
developers are doing to allow their users to specify layouts
might help ?

They're already working on a library (hwloc) to let a process
learn about the architecture of the system and they are
grappling with just this issue.

Thoughts ?
