It seems that I'm suffering a common misconception about
this as there's already a patch in Torque from GATECH to
set RLIMIT_AS for (p)mem, but I have to agree with both
you and Ake that only a limit on actual RSS makes sense
for pmem.
I think I've been assuming that virtual memory == swap
and getting rather puzzled about why on earth people
would want that in HPC given that swap = bad.

The new kernel cgroups might make that a lot easier
to monitor too, though it'll mean that pbs_mom will
have to support both it and cpusets.
